Ingredients
Scale
Apple Mixture
- 2 cups peeled and diced apples
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (used to toss with apples, portion estimated)
Bread Batter
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Cinnamon Sugar Swirl
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Caramel Glaze
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Peel and dice the apples into bite-sized pieces. Toss them in a bowl with about 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon to coat. Set aside to marinate.
- Make Cinnamon Sugar Swirl: In a small bowl, mix 1/3 cup brown sugar with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. This will be used to create flavorful layers inside the bread.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter with 1 cup granulated sugar until the mixture becomes fluffy and light in color.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in eggs one at a time, ensuring each is well incorporated before adding the next. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for flavor.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
- Mix Batter: Alternately add the dry ingredients and 1/2 cup milk into the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined to avoid overmixing.
- Layer Batter and Apples: Grease a loaf pan. Pour half of the batter into the pan, then layer half of the cinnamon-coated apples on top. Sprinkle with half of the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Repeat Layers and Swirl: Add the remaining batter, followed by the rest of the apples and cinnamon sugar. Using a knife, gently swirl through the batter to distribute the cinnamon sugar and apples evenly.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaf for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the bread is golden brown.
- Cool Bread: Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before glazing.
- Prepare Caramel Glaze: In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, and 2 tablespoons heavy cream. Simmer over medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the glaze thickens. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- Glaze and Serve: Drizzle the warm caramel glaze evenly over the cooled bread. Slice and serve to enjoy this decadent treat.
Notes
- You can substitute the apples with your favorite variety for different flavors and textures.
- If you prefer a less sweet dessert, reduce the amount of sugar in the batter slightly.
- Ensure the bread is completely cooled before glazing to prevent the glaze from soaking in too much.
- Store leftover bread wrapped in plastic or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- For a dairy-free option, substitute butter with a plant-based margarine and use plant-based milk and cream alternatives for the glaze.
