  • Total Time: 1 hour 55 minutes
  • Yield: 16 bars 1x

Description

Decadent Turtle Bars combine a buttery shortbread crust, rich gooey caramel loaded with toasted pecans, and a luscious melted chocolate topping. This indulgent dessert offers a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and nutty flavors, finished with a glossy chocolate layer for irresistible bars that are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust

  • 1 cup Cold Butter
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar

For the Caramel Layer

  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 cup Toasted Pecans
  • 1 teaspoon Sea Salt

For the Topping

  • 2 cups Chocolate Chips (semi-sweet or milk)
  • 1/2 cup Extra Pecans (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine cold butter, all-purpose flour, and 3/4 cup granulated sugar. Blend the ingredients until the mixture is crumbly and holds together when pressed. Press the mixture evenly into a lined 9×13-inch baking dish to form the crust.
  2. Bake the Crust: Place the crust in the oven and bake for 15-18 minutes or until it turns a beautiful golden color. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly while you prepare the caramel layer.
  3. Make the Caramel: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup unsalted butter. Stir constantly until the sugar melts and the mixture becomes smooth, which will take about 5 minutes. Whisk in 1/2 cup heavy cream until the caramel is creamy and silky, then fold in 1 cup toasted pecans and 1 teaspoon sea salt for added flavor complexity.
  4. Assemble and Bake Caramel Layer: Pour the warm caramel mixture over the pre-baked crust and spread it evenly. Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 10-12 minutes until the caramel layer is bubbly and set.
  5. Add the Chocolate Topping: Remove the bars from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate chips in 30-second intervals in the microwave, stirring between each interval, until smooth. Pour the melted chocolate over the caramel layer and spread evenly to create a glossy finish. Sprinkle the 1/2 cup extra pecans over the top for decoration and added crunch.
  6. Cool and Slice: Let the bars cool at room temperature for at least 1 hour to allow the layers to set properly. For cleaner cuts, refrigerate the bars for 30 minutes before slicing into individual bars. Serve and enjoy your decadent turtle bars!

Notes

  • Use cold butter for the crust to ensure a crisp and buttery texture.
  • Toast the pecans beforehand to enhance their flavor and crunch.
  • Melt the chocolate carefully to avoid burning by microwaving in short intervals.
  • Refrigerating before cutting helps in achieving cleaner, neater bars.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
